Maths at Rushey Green

At Rushey Green, the maths curriculum is designed to be ambitious, inclusive and rooted in the belief that every child can achieve highly in mathematics. Lessons are practical, engaging and built around exploration, giving children the chance to investigate ideas, talk about their thinking and make meaningful connections between concepts. This approach helps pupils see the bigger picture, deepen their understanding and develop confidence as mathematical thinkers.

The curriculum is shaped and strengthened by guidance from the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Their materials support teachers in planning small, connected steps that build secure understanding over time. This includes:

  • Carefully sequenced teaching points that ensure progression is clear and coherent
  • High‑quality representations and models that help children grasp mathematical structure
  • Opportunities for reasoning and problem‑solving woven into every unit
  • A focus on fluency that goes beyond recall, encouraging flexibility and efficiency

Arithmetic fluency gives children the confidence to work efficiently with numbers, recall key facts quickly and apply methods accurately when solving problems. To support this, pupils take part in short, daily practice that helps them build strong number sense and secure the foundations they need for more complex maths.

How Daily Fluency Practice Works

  • Children complete Fluency in Five questions at the start of each maths lesson.
  • These questions focus on essential skills such as number bonds, times tables, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division strategies.
  • The tasks are designed to be quick, varied and carefully sequenced so that children revisit important knowledge regularly.
  • This daily routine helps pupils strengthen recall, improve accuracy and develop confidence when working with numbers.

Third Space Learning Daily Maths Challenge

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a national assessment designed to ensure that children have secure, rapid recall of all multiplication facts up to 12×12. Strong times table knowledge underpins later maths, helping pupils tackle more complex calculations, fractions, division, and problem solving with confidence. Times Tables Rock Stars is used consistently across the school to support children’s recall of multiplication facts.
